Better traffic safety during waste collection

ReMidt works continuously with traffic safety in connection with the collection of waste. You and others in your immediate environment may be affected by measures to increase safety, and your contribution will then be important when we need to find good solutions.

It must be safe for pedestrians, cyclists and others traveling on the road when our cars are out collecting the waste. We must also look after our drivers so that their everyday working life is experienced as safe and predictable. We therefore aim to reduce reversing distances and other critical situations for traffic safety.

Fortunately, most of our subscribers have good solutions which mean that we can safely arrive and empty the cans, but in some areas it is unfortunately the case that roads and container locations have to be changed. Which roads or areas we prioritize are governed by risk assessments that are made when a case is reported by customers or our renovators. Then there has often been an incident with damage or a high risk of damage, or several minor incidents which together mean that the road or pick-up point is considered too risky to be serviced by us. If this applies to you, you will receive an inquiry from us describing what needs to be done and why, and how the process will continue.

Examples of cases where changes must be made:

  • places with missing or too little turning space
  • places where there is more than 5 meters from the pick-up point where the can is placed to the road where the waste disposal truck is driving
  • roads where access is narrow or difficult for other reasons
  • roads where there are parked cars etc. which contribute to reduced accessibility
  • roads where it is necessary to reverse
What kind of changes can be made?

To improve traffic safety, there are several measures that may be relevant, for example:

  • moving waste containers
  • that containers must be rolled out on emptying day
  • establishment of joint solutions/sharing of waste containers
  • improvement and establishment of a turning area
  • improvement of road
  • rescheduling of the waste disposal route
  • pruning of plantings and hedges
Placement of waste containers

As the home owner, you are responsible for the location of your waste containers, and that the location is in line with regulations and guidelines for location. This means, among other things, that:

  • the waste containers must be placed a maximum of 5 meters from the road the waste collection truck is driving
  • the waste containers must be easily accessible to the renovator
  • the waste containers must be placed on a flat and firm surface at ground level, with sufficient area for handling the containers
  • the waste containers must be able to be wheeled freely to the waste collection truck without stairs or other obstacles
  • the road the waste disposal truck is traveling on must have sufficient bearing capacity and clear visibility
  • the road must have a road width of at least 3,5 metres, a clear height of at least 4 meters and have a sufficiently large turning area or turning hammer at the last subscriber

See also the guidelines in chapter 9.3 for supplementary requirements for roads.

What can you do?

If you already think that your location of waste containers or access to them should be changed, you can try to find a new location yourself that must be approved by ReMidt. Then you must do the following:

  • check that the new location is in line with location guidelines before taking action
  • get approval from the land owner, if you want to move your containers to a place where you do not own the land yourself
  • contact ReMidt, so that we can check that the location is satisfactory and approve the change
