Food waste bags - an environmental choice

Food waste bags - an environmental choice

As a private customer at ReMidt you will be given your own bags to be used for food waste. The choice of food waste bags is an environmental choice we have taken together with other waste disposal companies throughout Central Norway.

The food waste bags are certified 100% degradable, and are used throughout the process where food waste is turned into biogas and biofertiliser. The bags contain renewable raw materials and make the process "cleaner". The alternative would be to use normal carrier bags. By using biobags, we reduce plastic consumption by 70-80 tonnes per year when all 17 municipalities have adopted their own cans for food waste. The choice of degradable food waste bags is an environmental choice - both to reduce the consumption of plastic and to prevent the spread of microplastics.

The bio bags we use are the most durable degradable bags on the market. To make the best use of the waste, we have collected some tips here:

  • Avoid food waste with a lot of liquid, such as soup and stew leftovers in the bags.
  • Feel free to put some paper towels in the bottom of the bucket before you open the bag. It helps to absorb moisture. Used paper towels can also be thrown in the bag.
  • Change the bag after 2-5 working days or even more often if you have a lot of food waste. The bags you have been given correspond to a consumption of three each week, and you are welcome to get more if you need it.
  • Feel free to use a ventilated basket for the bag, instead of a tight bucket. Do not use a lid on the bucket.
  • Store the bag roll in a dry, airy and cool place.
  • Raw fish and raw meat should have double packaging - use two bags.
  • Be careful to put the bags in the can - do not throw them up. The bags are easier to break if they are thrown / dropped in the can.
  • The bags must be tied in a way that prevents them from leaking food waste into the can.
  • Remember that the most important thing you do is to avoid food waste! Food should be eaten, not thrown away.
  • If you have the opportunity to put the food waste bin in a shady place, it is recommended.
  • Clean the can of ammonia water once in a while - then make sure that the can is completely dry before you put food waste bags in the can.

The food waste bags do not have ordinary handles, but four loose ends. Tie them tightly before throwing the bag in your container. The most important thing you can do to avoid problems in the food waste bin is to make sure that the bag is tight and not too full.

For joy and hassle
For those of you who have not had food waste sorted before, a change is required in the kitchen and in the kitchen counter. For most people, a long-awaited opportunity to take care of food waste as a recyclable resource, while some experience more sorting as extra work and "fun". Sorting food waste is nationally determined and not something we as a waste disposal company or you as the owner of a house or apartment can choose not to do.

You can read more about the food waste bags we use at the manufacturer Naturabiomat. ReMidt IKS has chosen the bags through a collaboration with waste management companies throughout Central Norway. The bags are in use or will be used for food waste for all households covered by Innherred Renovasjon, Steinkjer municipality, Midtre Namdal Avfallsselskap, ReMidt, FIAS and Trondheim Renholdsverk.

What happens to food waste after your can is emptied?
ReMidt IKs drives all food waste to EcoPro AS in Verdal. There, the waste is converted into biogas as fuel in vehicles and biofertilizer for agriculture.
The whole process in short version can be found here.

Food waste from cottages and holiday homes
As of today, we lack a good distribution system for food waste bags to all cabins and holiday homes in the 17 municipalities we handle waste from. Food waste from cabins and holiday homes must therefore be delivered in ordinary plastic bags and placed in separate bins for food waste at the return point for leisure subscribers. The plastic bags are removed mechanically before the food waste is treated and recycled, but plastic bags that have been used for food waste must be recycled for energy - unlike the biobags from private households that turn into biogas and biofertilizer.
